This stretch of road along Kampung Batu Satu in Lutong is dark at night due to faulty street lighting.

MIRI: About 200 street lights from Desa Senadin traffic light junction in Lutong to Kuala Baram, including its Industrial areas, are said to be faulty for about a month now.

It meant motorists depended only on their headlights when using these roads at night when it is pitch-black.

Lutong resident Hasbi Mohammad, 50, was puzzled why the authorities concerned never bothered to quickly resolve the problem, which also affected roads along Kampung Senadin, Kampung Batu Satu and Kampung Muhibbah.

“The problem has been there for about a month now, but why nobody bothered to do anything about it is beyond my comprehension.

“The whole thing is giving our city a bad name, especially among Bruneians, as they also use the affected stretches,” said Hasbi.

Fisherman Madon Mop was also frustrated as it had become risky and dangerous to get to his fishing hut near Batu 5 Lutong-Kuala Baram Road at night due to the darkness.

He said he was also worried for the safety of the many motorcyclists who used those roads at night.

When contacted, Choo Min Chong, who is Sarawak Energy Berhad’s regional manager for Miri, Limbang, Lawas and Bintulu, said SEB would look into the matter promptly.

He said SEB’s maintenance section would be tasked to check if the problem was due to faulty cables, stolen cables or blown bulbs.
