Myanmar president begins two-day state visit to Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Myanmar President U Thein Sein begins his two-day working visit to Malaysia today at the invitation of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah.

The Foreign Ministry in a statement today said the visit is the first for Thein Sein following his appointment as the President of Myanmar in 2011.

Thein Sein is accompanied by his wife, Daw Khin Khin Win, Cabinet ministers and government officials.

The programme of the visit includes a State Welcoming Ceremony, an audience with His Majesty and Her Majesty the Raja Permaisuri Agong and a State Banquet.

Thein Sein is also scheduled to have a restricted meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, followed by a delegation meeting before attending an official luncheon hosted by Najib and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

According to the statement, Thein Sein and Najib are expected to discuss the latest developments on the existing bilateral cooperation between Myanmar and Malaysia, besides exchanging views on regional issues.

Myanmar is Malaysia’s 38th largest trading partner globally and 7th largest trading partner among ASEAN member countries, with total trade between the two countries recorded at RM3.18 billion (USD972.1 million) last year. — BERNAMA
