The SMK Tabuan Jaya team in high spirit after maintaining their lead in the 51st MSSM Kuching Zone B Track and Field Championship at Jubilee Ground yesterday.

KUCHING: Sarawak Sports School SMK Tabuan Jaya are in cruise control as they took a comfortable lead over rivals SMK Lundu on the second day of the 51st MSSM Kuching Zone B Track and Field Championship
at Jubilee Ground yesterday.

The defending champions, who already led the medal standings with seven gold, two silver and two bronze medals on the first day, collected 12 more golds yesterday to add to their total medal haul of 19-12-7 to score 320 points (as at 4.10pm).

SMK Lundu have now bagged 11-14-6 for a tally of 303.5 points.

In third to fifth spots are SM Lodge (4-2-3), SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg (3-1-5) and SMK Santubong (2-5-5) respectively.

Five new records have been created in the competition so far.

Chung Woon Shyen of SMK Lundu broke a record set in 1992 when she threw the discus (1kg) to a new distance of 30.59m in the Girls U14 category.

The previous record of 28.16m belonged to Ng Lee Lee of Chung Hua Middle School No. 1.

Asly Chua An Wen of Tunku Putra International School clocked an impressive 10.85s in the Boys U18 100m to eclipse the meet record of 11.00s set by Terrance Manja Janting of SMK Penrissen No. 1 in 2012.

Myra Aishah Mikail of SMK St Teresa set a new record of 5:31.50s in the Girls U15 1,500m. The record of 5:32.07s was held by Lai Eng Phay of SMK Tabuan Jaya since 2003.

Mohd Norhazim Ahmad SMK Lundu won the Boys U14 200m hurdles with a time of 26.82s to erase the old mark of 28.50s set by Adam Chisnal Dicky of SMK Tabuan Jaya in 2011.

Having broken a new record of 27.33s in the semi-finals of the Boys U15 200m hurdles, William Agantha Jekey from SMK Tabuan Jaya improved his time to 26.64s in the final, beating Mior Mohd Afiq Mior Azwar of SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg (27.12s) and Chai Zhi Woon of SMK Padawan (28.34s).

Earlier, William had won the Boys U15 110m hurdles gold in a time of 16.19s.

A total of 1,703 students from 54 schools are taking part in the championship that ends on Friday.
