KUCHING: The Health Inspector Union of Sarawak Health Department (HIUS) will be holding its inaugural International Environment Health Conference (IEHC) this October.

The two-day conference themed ‘Threats to Health: Uncovering Issues, Challenges and Preventions’ will be held at Pullman Kuching Hotel from Oct 27 to 28, and Minister of Health Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam is expected to officiate.

Deputy State Director of Health (Public Health) Dr Jamilah Hashim said she was proud that HIUS had proposed for this important conference to be held.

“This is a timely programme held at a particular important juncture for environmental health development when many noteworthy achievements in environmental health attained in the last century have come under threat from the combined effects of global food, fuel, economic and climate change crisis,” she said before the launching of the website for the conference here yesterday.

“We hope it will bring together environmental health professionals, allied health and workers, public and private policy makers, researchers, students, industries, personnel and even the general public, both locally and abroad,” she added.

Dr Jamilah further disclosed that the conference would address threats to critical health issues, challenges and prevention of diseases.

“I sincerely hope that the conference will be an excellent platform for debate and discussion to pave a way for change and improvement,” she said.

She also called on government ministries and departments, local councils and industries to come forward as delegates or sponsors for the event.

Earlier, HIUS president Sabri Sahari said that the conference will be a great event for Sarawak, especially in the field of environmental health.

He said the conference had garnered great support from the government and the ministry of health, adding that he expected to see 1,000 delegates attending the conference.

Beside the conference and symposium, HIUS will feature social events such as free dental care, cancer check-ups, eye tests and general health screenings.

Details on the conference and the registration fees are available online at www.hius.org.my.
