Man claims trial to cheating charge

KUCHING: A man claimed trial at a magistrates’ court yesterday to a charge of cheating another man of RM700 last week.

Mohammad Nizam Ali Sulaiman, 25, from Kampung Sri Arjuna at Jalan Penrissen appeared before Magistrate Zulhairil Sulaiman, who adjourned the case to March 25 for further mention.

Nizam was released on RM2,000 court bail in two sureties pending the disposal of the case.

He allegedly cheated Li Ching Shin by receiving RM500 and RM200 on two separate occasions on March 10 at 8pm and 11pm near a school at Jalan Eastern Park here.

It is said that the complainant gave Nizam the cash as payment for a car, which Nizam claimed to belong to his mother and was being sold for RM800.

It is believed that the complainant never received the car.

Cheating, under Section 420 of the Penal Code, provides for a minimum one year in prison or maximum of 10 years as well as a fine.

Separately, the remand order for a bank general manager, who was detained for alleged criminal breach of trust (CBT), was extended for two days starting yesterday.

Application for the remand extension was granted in accordance with Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code by the court registrar in the remand court until Friday.

The 45-year-old suspect was arrested on Saturday after a police report was lodged against her pertaining to a scam via email involving RM754,000.

The case is being investigated under Section 408 of the Penal Code.
