Con artist gets 36-month additional jail term

KOTA KINABALU: A 34-year-old man, who is currently serving a prison term, was sentenced to another 36 months in jail, and ordered to be given four strokes of the cane for conning two people of RM3,500.

Wong Vun Kong, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison in February, pleaded guilty to two additional charges before magistrate Mohd Faiz Omar at the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday.

On the first count, he pleaded guilty to cheating NurFazirah Mamat, 27, of RM1,500, the money being a rental deposit for an apartment in Putatan.

He had committed the offence at Center Point shopping mall on January 1, 2015 at around 5:30pm.

Based on the facts of the case, after the victim had given money to Wong, she was given a key to the house. The next day, when the victim tried to use the key, she disocvered that the key to the house did not work.

He was sentenced to 16 months in prison and was given two strokes of the cane.

Next, he cheated Dato’ Mohd Ayub Janin, 44, of RM2,000, as a deposit for the purchase of a Perodua Viva, at Taipan Inanam on April 18, last year at around 10am.

The facts of the case stated that after the payment had been made and the receipt issued, the accused and the victim had agreed to meet at a car wash near the complex.

Arriving earlier, the victim had tried to call the accused, who in turn, did not pick up the call. The victim immediately lodged a police report.

Wong was sentenced to 20 months in prison and ordered to be given two strokes of the cane.

The magistrate also ordered Wong to serve his prison sentences consectuively.

Both offences, framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code, carry a prison term not exceeding 10 years, with whipping and a fine.

His mitigation, Wong told the court that he could not express his regret for the offence which he had committed and said that he was very remorseful for what he had done.

He also asked for a lighter sentence as he had a family to look after.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Jakariyah Jupakkal, who proseucted, urged that a heavy sentence be meted out to Wong as he had been convicted and sentenced of conning six people of RM10,433.87 in early February.
