SIBU: The Sarawak United Association of Chinese School Boards of Management yesterday thanked the state government for its caring attitude towards the development of Chinese-medium education.

A press statement from chairman Temenggong Vincent Lau said the association regarded the coordination between the Chinese community and the state government a new dawn.

“We firstly thank former Chief Minister Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud for granting 2,000 hectares to back up Chinese education development. Then, we received a grant of RM3 million last year from Datuk Patinggi Adenan, and this year, we received another RM4 million from him again. We are grateful to the two chief ministers,” said the statement.

The association also praised Adenan for giving the grant annually, saying the caring attitude of the state government for Chinese education has received accolades nationwide.

“Chinese education development has gone through hard times, and this cooperation between the state government, our association and the various organisations in Sarawak is a hope that rises from the people and the government of Sarawak,” said the statement.

The association also called Adenan a caring Chief Minister with a heart for the people.

“He is concerned with the hardship of the Chinese community and understands the painstaking efforts of the community in building education.”

The association added that Adenan had on various occasions also supported the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and discussed it as well as other Chinese-medium education issues with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.

It called on the state government to accept the UEC even if the federal government does not do so.

“We believe with the continued efforts from all

sectors with the state government, Chinese education development will continue to surge. With back up and support from Adenan, we hope UEC will be also accepted by the government one day,” added the statement.
