Delay GST – Sabah Builders Association

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Builders Association (SBA) has urged the federal government to delay the April 1 implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as many traders in Sabah are not ready and familiar with the new tax system.

It was one of a few resolutions passed by SBA recently during its annual general meeting (AGM) and election of new office bearers for 2015-2016 term.

The association also urged the relevant authorities to simplify employment procedures for foreign workers, especially in the construction sector and to reduce the current levy on foreign workers.

The present levy, combine with other fees in recruiting workers really, was a burden to association members, said SBA in a statement yesterday.

On the elections of new office bearers, Cheong Kwee Min was elected as the new president after incumbent Choo Kin Min did not seek re-election after helming the association for three consecutive terms.

The other new committee members are deputy president Lou Chi Nam, Kung Ping Kun (vice president) secretaries Elizabeth Chung (Chinese slot ) and Gerald Goh (Bahasa Malaysia and English slot) Johnny Wong (honorary treasurer), C. L. Lo (general affairs head), Chui Swee Kong (general affairs vice-head) Welfare: Head Choo Wei Tak (welfare head) Henry Tsen (welfare vice-head), Ralph Chung (recreation head).

Council members are Chong Chiung Kyun, Tsen Yi Fern, Chong Kui Kap and Michael Voon. Trustees are Choo Kim Min and Wong Chun Lam.
