KOTA KINABALU: The dolphin that was found stranded at Likas Bay here on March 19 died two days ago.
This was disclosed by Sabah Wildlife Department assistant director Dr Sen Nathan when asked for updates on the dolphin’s condition.
“Unfortunately the dolphin died yesterday,” he said and refused to comment any further since Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will be organising a press conference on the death of the dolphin at 3.30pm today.
The three-metre long male dolphin was believed to be suffering from chronic infection and had got too weak to fight the currents when it was washed ashore at Likas Bay.
Dr Sen was reported as saying after the dolphin was moved to the Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) at UMS, its condition was weak and erratic.
The dolphin was treated with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, appetite stimulant and multivitamins, he said.
He noted after the rescue mission the dolphin’s chances of survival was very slim and that the rescuers could only hope for the best.
