Lorry driver dies after head-on crash

Fire and Rescue Services personnel working frantically to free the victim who was trapped at the driver’s seat.

TUARAN: A 25-year-old lorry driver died at the Tuaran Hospital two hours after the 10-ton vehicle he was driving collided with a six-ton lorry at Km 10.7, Tamparuli-Ranau road, near Kampung Minangkob, here yesterday.

Rifki Bahazin from Kampung Tebobon, Menggatal succumbed to his injuries in the Tuaran Hospital at 9.30am.

It is said that the victim was heading to Kota Kinabalu from Ranau when he was believed to have lost control of the lorry as it collided with the other lorry that was transporting tyres to Ranau at 7.45am.

The victim’s lorry was not loaded.

District police chief DSP Mohd Fuad Abdul Malek, when contacted, said the victim was pinned in the driver’s seat and it took several minutes for the Tuaran Fire and Rescue Department personnel to free him.

“He was admitted to the Tuaran Hospital intensive care unit but died a couple of hours later,” he said.

Mohd Fuad added that the driver of the six-ton lorry only sustained minor injuries and was given outpatient treatment in the same hospital.

Mohd Fuad said the case would be investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and he urged eyewitnesses to come forward to assist them in this investigation.
