MIRI: Farmers in Bekenu are reminded not to conduct open burning activities in view of the prevailing dry spell which is expected to last until end of April.

In giving this reminder, Assistant Minister of Early Childhood Education and Family Development Rosey Yunus said this is to avoid forest and bush fires.

“The peat fire burning in Miri now has caused a hazy situation in the city. Thus, I’m hoping the people in Bekenu will not conduct open burning activities as it would only worsen the current haze condition,” she stated when contacted by The Borneo Post yesterday.

Rosey, who is also Bekenu assemblywoman, reminded them to take extra precautions when conducting activities involving fire such as cooking.

She said that even sparks can easily cause dry foliage and material such as wood and plastic to catch fire.

On Wednesday, she joined a gotong-royong activity organised by a women group, Perwani, of Kampung Sinup, Sibuti.

During the event, she told the villagers of Kampung Sinop and Kampung Mutap that their applications for clean water supply hade been forwarded to the Ministry of Public Utilities.

Later at the same function, she presented a Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant of RM15,000 to the village security and development committee (JKKK) of Kampung Sinop.

Ketua Kaum Ramli Talib, Ketua Kaum Amin Antin, councillor Sulaiman Ahmad and chairman of women activities committee for Bekenu/Niah Rita Ahmad also attended the function.
