KUCHING: A total 20 poor families received donations in cash and kind (food items) during a charity event held in conjunction with the visit of Thailand’s Buddhist spiritual figure Ruesi Mettancha to Kuching recently.

Voluntary social worker Lim Chee Haw, who acted as a middleman to identify the recipients, said the event was funded by Buddhist devotees who came to see Mettancha.

He said the recipients included a disabled 32-year-old Ahsan Assin from Kampung Blimbin Krokong near Bau, while the others were from Stutong, Kenyalang Park, Siburan, Matang and Batu Kawa.

“It was a special occasion not just because it marked the visit of Ruesi Mettancha, but what was more significant was that we gave out donations to people from different racial and religious backgrounds,” he said.

On another matter, Lim said poor families needing coffins during time of bereavement are welcomed to contact him for help.

He said that through cash donations from Good Samaritans, many coffins at a coffin shop here are now reserved for poor and needy families.
