Wong: Sibu to have two new roads costing RM106m

SIBU: Two new roads proposed to be built here at a total cost of RM106 million are expected to ease traffic substantially, according to Second Finance Minister and Local Government and Community Development Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.

He told a press conference here yesterday that the proposed 4.5km road linking Aman Road to Airport Road would cost about RM35 million, while the other 2.5km stretch connecting Ulu Sungai Merah Road with Kemuyang Road would be worth RM71 million.

“These two very strategic roads are very important to Sibu because of the traffic congestion.

“We are bidding for it and hopefully it will be implemented under the 11MP (11th Malaysia Plan),” Wong said.

Meanwhile, Wong disclosed that 15 village roads in Bawang Assan area would be upgraded at a cost of about RM3.8 million.

“They are located in both Iban and Chinese areas and will be completed in six to eight months’ time,” he said, adding that the funding came from the state government.

These roads are Melanggan (Rumah Sia to Rumah Unggah); access road to TR Juing (Pasir Mas); Kampung Bugan Besar Road; access road to SJK Kwong Hua; Mawah Road; Sing Road; access road to Rumah Nuing Lebaan; access road to Lorry Association Sibu (completed); access road and compound to four-storey multi-purpose hall (Methodist Church) Sungai Merah, Selemo Road; Cing Nan Chiong Road; access road to Ulu Sungai Assan Cemetery and access road to Sungai Pak.

Wong also pointed out that Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King had requested for the upgrading of the access road to Ulu Sungai Assan Cemetery and the access road to Sungai Pak.
