MIRI: Years of perseverance and customers’ support has finally paid off for Jeanny Kong when she collected some 11.1kg of recycled ring tabs.

Handing over the tabs kept in two 18-kg paint buckets to Lions Club of Batu Niah, Kong shared that the collection did not come easy but from the support of her family, friends and her customers.

“Initially, it was a hobby I shared with my family. Collecting ring tabs from aluminium cans could be addictive. Little did I know that it could be donated for charity. I am glad my hobby can help someone out there,” said Kong who operates a stall selling traditional Foochow snacks in Permyjaya here.

The aluminium can ring tabs were contributed to the Aluminum Ring Tabs Charity Project to be used to make prostheses. Some 3,000 tabs are needed to make a pair of prosthetic legs.

President of Lions Club of Batu Niah, Liew Li Mui and the Aluminum Ring Tabs Charity Project organising chairman Alan Yong expressed their gratitude towards Kong’s support.

“Despite the fact that this charity project has been going on for several years now, Kong was the first to have collected and donated this much. I am sure the public has little knowledge about what these little ring tabs could do. Hence, this is a great opportunity to educate our community.

“Never mind whatever the amount is, it is the thought that counts. Kong should be taken as a fine example to encourage our members of the public, that a small gesture could help the less fortunate,” Yong said.

He also added that the project is a long term programme. Therefore, the public should not feel any pressure nor rush to collect the ring tabs.
