SIBU: A Chinese national who suffered from a heart condition died in Sibu Hospital after she was brought in unconscious while in police custody on Friday night.

Liang Aiting was arrested on Thursday evening to help in a cheating case under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

The next day while under police custody, she fainted at 6.30pm.

Police rushed her to hospital but Liang from Fujian Province died at 9pm after futile attempts to revive her.

She worked as a fengshui consultant here, giving locals advice on fengshui matters.

Her husband Yi Jianlong had been accompanying her to Sibu and they used to stay in the same hotel in town.

Yi said his wife suffered from a heart problem and had been operated on in China three years ago.

The couple has four children.

Yi said prior to his wife’s arrest on Thursday afternoon, he had called her at 3pm and she answered his call while she was at a supermarket.

“I called again an hour later but she did not answer my call anymore.”

Yi said he called her numerous times thereafter but to no avail.

He said the woman owner of the hotel accompanied him to lodge a police report on his missing wife as they did not know she was then at the police station.

Yi was told his wife was in police custody when he returned to the police station on Friday morning. He was informed that his wife had died in hospital that night.

He felt helpless but managed to get help from the woman owner of the hotel who called the hotel association chairman and he, in turn, called Dudong assemblyman Yap Hoi Liong for help.

Yap said he called deputy police chief Supt Martin Koo to enquire about Liang’s death.

“Koo found that Liang was arrested to help in a cheating case under Section 420 of the Penal Code. He revealed that after Liang fainted, police rushed her to the hospital where she died,” Yap said, assuring Liang’s husband of his help to follow up on the case.

Yap hoped Liang was not harshly treated while in detention, and that Liang did not die as a result of the interrogation.

“I’m waiting for the report from the police,” he said.
