Camp participants reminded to be cautious in using social media

KUCHING: Youths are reminded to be careful in using social media, like Facebook, so as to avoid spreading false information.

SUPP president Senator Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said although technology had made life easier and simpler, it also aided in spreading half-truths, lies and rumours.

“When you go on Facebook and other social media, there are various things posted. But before you click ‘Share’ button, make sure you know that what you are propagating is true. Don’t just simply assume whatever you see online is true,” he said at the closing of the Interschool Buddhist Youth Camp yesterday.

Dr Sim urged campers to respect, be sensitive and understand others’ religions as everybody lives in a multi-cultural, multi-racial and multi-religious country.

He hoped that Sarawakians would practise higher racial tolerance, unlike their Peninsular Malaysian counterparts who split up whenever there is a religious issue.

The half-day annual camp, held for the ninth time, at SMK Green Road was attended by 162 secondary students from eight schools.

During the camp, participants interacted with students from other schools and took part in games to foster better ties.
