Take up economic activities, TYT tells Muslims

SRI AMAN: Muslims here were urged to get involved seriously in economic activities.

According to Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, it was time that Muslims became major players in economic activities by grabbing any opportunities which might come with development.

“Since 20 years ago, the government had arranged the development for Sri Aman and the per capita income of the people here had gradually increased over the years,” said Taib.

He was speaking at the earth breaking ceremony for Sarawak Islamic Complex in Sri Aman at Jalan Datuk here yesterday.

Taib also said the private sector should work together with the government in developing Sri Aman.

“With the rise in technological know-how, financially good companies should play their part to assist the government improve Sri Aman to be on par with other towns in Sarawak,” he said.

He added that Islam is not just about devoting oneself to religious activities, but it is the duty of Muslims to improve themselves and their community through economic activities.

“I strongly believe that this new complex will be the centre for the people here in Sri Aman, and hope that the non-Muslims here will work closely with their Muslim friends to bring Sri Aman’s economy to greater heights,” he said.

Taib also said the complex will be a statement of commitment by the Muslims in Sri Aman towards economic development and progress.
