ALOR SETAR: A non-governmental organisation has asked the Home Ministry to give more powers to the police to fight illegal gambling more effectively.

Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) said the police found it difficult to act against those who operated illegal gambling activities due to lack of evidence to prosecute them.

Its president, Azwanddin Hamzah, claimed that some of these operators deposited their earnings abroad to avoid detection by the authorities.

“We ask the government to update existing laws to enable the police to discharge their duty more effectively to combat illegal gambling,” he told reporters at the Kedah Police headquarters.

He also said that the ratio of a policeman to people in the country was one to 3,000 to 5,000 compared to 1 to 200 to 300 in other countries as per the international practice.

Azwanddin had earlier called on Kedah Police chief Datuk Zamri Yahya and handed over a certificate of congratulations for the police success in wiping out illegal gambling in the state. — Bernama
