KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah opposition pact has officially broken its ties and ceased all political cooperation with Sabah PAS after finding it hard to agree with PAS’ push to implement hudud law in Kelantan.
Their spokesman, Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin, who is also Sabah PKR Leadership Council chairman, said the decision was made at the meeting attended by representatives of PAS, DAP and PKR here today.
“After taking into consideration all the opinions, current factors and political situation, and with a heavy heart we decided to break our ties and cooperation with PAS.
“However, we will remain committed to the opposition pact and maintain the cooperation between PKR and DAP,” he told a press conference here yesterday.
Lajim, however, stressed that although they opposed the implementation of the hudud law, the Muslim leaders in PKR had never rejected the law in principle as it is Allah’s law.
Besides Lajim, the meeting was also attended by Sabah PAS deputy commissioner 1 Ali Hasan, Sabah PAS deputy commissioner 3 Hamid Ismail and Sabah DAP chairman
Jimmy Wong.
Meanwhile, Sabah state assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Salleh Tun Said Keruak said he was not surprised with the decision made by the opposition pact in Sabah to break its ties with PAS.
In fact, Salleh, who is also Sabah Umno deputy chairman, said he had expected it to happen as the three opposition parties had different ideologies.
“I was not surprised with this development because I know that the causes fought by these three opposition parties differed from one another and it was only a matter of time before this happened,” he said.
He also expressed hope that the people of Sabah would be able to judge for themselves the true colours of the opposition parties as all the unsolved domestic crisis and disputes only proved that they were not united and had no intention of developing the state. — Bernama
