KUCHING: A renowned icon of the Islamic world has urged local Muslims to strive in preserving peace and harmony in the state.

Zimbabwe Islamic Scholars Council Department chief Mufti Ismail Musa Menk – more popularly known as ‘Mufti Menk’ – acknowledges that Sarawak is truly a ‘melting pot’ of various cultures, races and religions.

“Still, in order for one to promote peace, it must first start from within that person’s heart,” he said during his short presentation on ‘Islam: A Religion of Peace’ at Islamic Information Centre (IIC) here yesterday.

The talk drew a crowd of more than 400 people including representatives from the media, various government departments, corporate bodies and non-governmental organisations.

The Muslim scholar was invited here for the ‘Mufti Menk: Up Close in Kuching’ programme, which included an earlier talk entitled ‘Back to Basics’ at Masjid Jamek in Petra Jaya on Saturday night.

The initiative by IIC in bringing Mufti Menk, who is known worldwide for his series of Islamic religious talks, here was to have him share his thoughts on various issues concerning Islam and the Muslim community around the world.

The programme yesterday was also attended by Sarawak Islamic Council president Datuk Putit Matzen and IIC chief executive officer Zabariah Matali.
