Chong: PKR should sever ties with PAS Sarawak

KUCHING: State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen calls on PKR Sarawak to sever ties with PAS Sarawak so that both can work together for the betterment of the state.

He said the Kelantan hudud law episode and the subsequent events that followed had clearly shown the political ideals and agenda of PAS ‘do not fit into our Sarawak society’.

He said before deciding to quit PR Sarawak, the state DAP had requested PAS Sarawak to make a resolution that hudud law was not suitable for Sarawak and that it would not pursue the implementation of hudud law in the state.

Chong, also Bandar Kuching MP and Kota Sentosa assemblyman, regretted that the request had been turned down by PAS Sarawak, indicating clearly the implementation of hudud law was also its political agenda.

“We all know that the implementation of hudud law will do no good to Sarawak.

“Therefore, there is no reason for us to continue cooperating with PAS which has made hudud law their agenda.

“The issue may be more complicated in Peninsular Malaysia where PAS, especially its progressive faction, has an important role to play to counter the dominance of Umno in the rural areas. This is not the case in Sarawak where there is no Umno.”

As such, he posed a question to PKR Sarawak: “Are you going to help PAS win seats in the coming state election so
that Sarawak DUN will have some PAS elected representatives?”

If the answer is positive, he said PKR would be doing a disservice to Sarawak by contributing to the growth of
PAS in the state thereby helping indirectly its hudud agenda.

“If the answer is ‘No’, then there is no point to put up a pretence of coalition when one does not help each other.”

He thus urged the state PKR chairman Baru Bian not to be so adamant about clinging on to PR Sarawak which, in essence, was broken the minute PAS showed its true colours and pursued the hudud agenda.

“I believe more can be achieved for the betterment of Sarawak with PKR Sarawak cooperating with DAP Sarawak rather than cooperating with PAS Sarawak.”
