Kuching A beat PTBS for state title

KUCHING: Kuching A made a successful defence of their Sarawak Inter-Division Tennis Championship crown when they beat Persatuan Tenis Bumiputera Sarawak (PTBS) 4-0 in the final at Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) Tennis Centre last Sunday.

Gilbert Yeo gave Kuching A the lead by defeating Muhd Syahmi Mohd Eshan 6-4, 6-4 in the first singles while Leslie Jong and Galvin Yeo made it 2-0 when they eased to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Mohd Zaki Pauzi and Nor Saiful Mohd Sudud in the first doubles.

In the second singles, Sukma 2012 gold medallist Rohaizat Achop beat Shuari Zawawi 6-3, 6-3 while Shawn Lee defeated Mohd Norhairi Khaidel 6-4, 5-2 (retired) in the third singles. The second doubles was not played.

En route to the final, Kuching A were unbeaten in the Group A matches, thrashing Sri Aman 4-1 and whitewashing Betong 5-0 before beating Bintulu 3-0 in the semi-finals.

PTBS had topped Group B after recording a 3-0 win over Bintulu and 4-1 over Kuching B. They advanced to the final after thumping Sri Aman 4-0 in the last four.

Forty-five players from Kuching A, Kuching B, PTBS, Sri Aman, Betong and Bintulu took part in the annual competition organised by SLTA. The tournament referee was Bong Vui Khee.
