KOTA KINABALU: At the moment the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was not imposed on fish and fruits since its official implementation on April 1 this year.

Fishmonger A.B Hassan, 71, told The Borneo Post yesterday that the prices of wet food such as fish were still the same as before when GST was not yet implemented.

“As far as I’m aware, there are no GST for fish and there is no ‘panic buying’ seen here,” said the senior citizen, who has been selling fish and seafood at the Central Market for more than 30 years.

He also said that his regular customers were still coming as usual to buy his fish.

“I come to the market at 4am every day and so far my regular buyers are still buying fish from me,” said A.B Hassan, hoping there would be no traders taking advantage of their customers.

Meanwhile, fruit seller, Jamaliah Manat, 62, said that there was no price hike on fruits at the moment even though GST had been fully implemented by the Government.

“So far my supplier did not charge me more than the usual prices, so I still maintain the usual prices,” she explained when met at the Sembulan market here.

She also said that her supplier would send fruits to her by using a car once a week.

“My supplier is from Tenom and as far as the fuel price is not increased then I don’t think there will be a price hike for their products,” said Jamaliah, adding that, the prices of some fruits depending on its ripe.

“For example; if the bananas are getting ripe, the price will be cheaper compared to still unripe fruits,” added Jamaliah, who has been selling fruits there since 23 years ago.
