KUCHING: State Sukma and MSSM athletes are expected to hog the limelight at the 43rd Sarawak Sports Schools Council (MSSS) Track and Field Championship at Tun Zaidi Stadium in Sibu from today until Saturday.

Sprinter Norris Foo is eyeing to repeat her victories in the Girls U18 100m, 200m and 100m hurdles last year while Quek Lee Yong is defending champion in the Boys U18 400m and 400m hurdles.

Norris and Lee Yong, who represented Malaysia at the 6th ASEAN School Games in Marikina, Philippines last December, will represent the Sibu team which is fielding the second largest contingent of 108 athletes after the 138-strong Kuching contingent.

Ting Aik Hou of Bintulu and Queenie Ting Kung Ni from Sarikei are also expected to dominate the throwing events for the Boys U18 and Girls U18 respectively.

Queenie Ting is the current record holder of the Girls U18 discus.

With Grace Wong Xiu Mei of Sarikei elevated to the national squad preparing for the upcoming SEA Games, it would be interesting to see who will win the Girls Open hammer throw and Girls U15 shot putt.

The tussle for team honours will be keen among Kuching, Miri, Sarikei and host Sibu, who finished in that order last year.

“I believe everyone has the chance of winning medals and we will try our best to do well in the meet,” Kuching coach Rasia Lutang said.

Meanwhile, a total of 838 athletes from 11 teams will take part in the annual MSSS championship, with Miri sending 112 athletes, Sarikei (98), Samarahan (81), Bintulu (69), Kapit (65), Betong (51), Sri Aman (47), Mukah (39) and Limbang (37). One hundred and eighty-six events will be competed over four days in the Under-18, 15, 14, 12 categories.

The championship is also aimed at selecting athletes to represent the state at the coming Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) Track and Field Championship in Melaka.
