MIRI: Eight non-governmental organisations (NGOs) lodged police reports at the Miri Central police station yesterday against a Facebook user known as Edwin Seli for allegedly making provocative comments that insult Islam on the social networking site.

The NGOs called on the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to take action against the individual.

Led by Rumpun Silat-Silat Sarawak (RSS) Miri chairman Ismawi Kedri, the other NGOs included Barisan Jemaah Islamiah Se-Malaysia Miri (Berjasa), Pertubuhan Kebajikan Ekonomi Bersaudara Malaysia Miri (Arkab), Pertubuhan Islam Gabungan Amal (Per-3) Miri, Badan Amal Tarbiah Sejagat (Batas Malaysia) Miri and Pertubuhan Kebajikan dan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Pekida).

Pertubuhan Ahli Sunah Wal Jemaah (Aswaja) and Pertubuhan Permaufakatan Majlis Ayahanda Malaysia (Permas) also filed police reports.

Ismawi said the authorities concerned must take action against any group or individuals, whether Muslim or Christian, trying to inflame racial or religious sentiments, in order to preserve the harmony of Sarawak’s multiracial people.

“Muslim NGOs will help the authorities by giving information on any individuals or groups trying to create unhealthy racial sentiments,” he said.
