SIBU: Four records were re-written on the first day of the 43rd Sarawak Sports Schools Council (MSSS) Track and Field Championship at Tun Zaidi Stadium yesterday.

State sprinter Norris Foo, representing host Sibu Division, led the way in the morning Girls U18 100m qualifying heats when she clocked 12sec flat. Last year, Norris set the record of 12.26sec in Kuching.

In the final, Norris staged another fine run and returned with a time of 12.1sec. Both times were hand-timed.

“It was a good run and the record is a bit of a surprise to me,” Norris said.

Her previous personal best in the event was 12.12sec which she achieved at the 2014 Sukma.

Norris is down to compete in 200m, 100m hurdles, 4x 100m relay and 4 x 400m relay in the course of the next three days.

She is not so sure about the relay events but as far as the individual events are concerned, the girl from SMK St Elizabeth is eyeing two more records.

“It’s not easy but I will try my best to ink my name in the record book,” she added.

Madalina Mimi Angga

In the Boys U18, Bintulu’s Abdul Rahman Lee heaved the discus to a new distance of 48.19m, eclipsing the old distance of 45.41m set by Sarikei’s Wong Siew Jie in 2010.

Limbang’s Madalina Mimi Angga emerged as a rising star when she sprung a surprise in the Girls U-12 long jump leaping to a distance of 4.77m to beat the old mark set by Kuching’s Chan Yeh Lan in 1979.

Her performance even stunned Sarawak Sports Schools Council Technical Committee chairman Ting Siew Nguong.

“Given proper training and exposure, Madalina should be able to explode into the scene with a big bang,” he predicted.

The other record of the day was contributed by Kuching’s Muhd Norhazim Ahmad in Boys U15 200m hurdles.

His winning time of 25.7sec slashed 1.6sec off the old mark established by Jeremy Brandon Danny in 2011.

Meanwhile, in the overall team standings, Kuching Division chalked up 84 points from eight gold, two silver and seven bronze medals to lead at the end of the first day.

Miri trailed with 66 points (3-6-3), followed by Sibu (63; 3-3-6), Sarikei (52; 4-6-1), Bintulu (34; 3-1-1), Limbang (32; 2-3-1), Mukah (10; 0-1-0), Kapit (9; 0-0-1), Betong (8; 0-0-2), Samarahan (7; 0-1-0) and Sri Aman (3; 0-0-1).
