SIBU: A total of 5,825 Sarawakians were among 54,700 Malaysians joining both federal and state civil service last year.

“In 2013, there were 6,009 Sarawakians joining the civil service,” Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Joseph Entulu, who is Selangau MP, told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He oversees the Public Service Commission (PSC) besides two other portfolios, namely Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning (Mampu) and Education Service Commission (ESC).

Entulu also disclosed that out of 1,605,245 applications made nationwide through the PSC portal last year, 161,711 applications came from Sarawak. The number of applications from Sarawak in 2013 was 198,266 from among 2,120,136 recorded nationwide.

He said among the 54,700 Malaysians recruited into the civil service last year, Sarawak Bumiputeras made up 7.3 per cent or 4,001 from the total applications of 1,605,245 received by PSC throughout the country, with 90,857 (5.7 per cent) from Sarawak Bumiputeras.

According to Entulu, the applications from Sarawak Bumiputeras made up 108,609 or 5.1 per cent of the total applications of 2,120,136 received nationwide in 2013. He also said out that applications for posts in the public sector must be made online at PSC’s portal www.spa.gov.my using the Job Registration for Public Service (SPA 8i) window.

On advertisement for vacancies, he said that starting in 2009, the PSC published vacancies in their portal. The commision had not advertised vacancies in newspapers after that, he added.

On key initiatives to be implemented this year, Entulu said the PSC would continue implementing all of them under the transformation programme — among them was the online public service entrance.

“Others include selection of candidate according to Competency Based Interview (CBI) and strengthening engagement with NGOs (non govermental organisation) or to enhance the awareness of public service vacancies,” he said.
