Students schooled on language, communication skills

MIRI: Students of SMK Marudi had the opportunity to enhance their language and communication skills at a workshop at Curtin University Sarawak.

Some 130 students from the school participated in the English and Bahasa Malaysia Workshop conducted by academics of the Faculty of Business and Humanities of the university last Wednesday.

The workshop was conducted as part of the university’s ongoing community programme and mission to engage communities and transform lives through leadership, innovation and excellence in teaching and research.

It kicked off with a presentation on communication skills by lecturer of Culture and Language Studies, Hanin Naziha, who spoke on the importance of good communication skills and how to be a good communicator.

A session on presentation skills conducted by associate lecturer of Culture and Language Studies Esther Tong Yi Zhen followed, during which the students had to apply what they had learnt by delivering impromptu one-minute speeches before their peers.

A brief talk on tertiary education, particularly at Curtin Sarawak, was given by head of department of Culture and Language Studies Michelle Voon Huey Fen and associate lecturer of Information Technology from the Faculty of Engineering and Science’s Department of Foundation in Engineering Nong Nurnie Mohd. Nistah.

The workshop concluded with two sessions on writing skills for fifth and sixth formers, respectively.
