LAWAS: A car rammed into automated teller machines (ATMs) and cash deposit machines (CDMs) at the Agro Bank here last Sunday afternoon, sending shock waves with many speculating that it was broad daylight robbery.

Closed circuit television (CCTV) recording showed a black Proton Waja sedan ramming the glass panel enclosing the machines at about 3pm, which sent shards of shattered glass to the ground.

Lawas OCPD DSP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad confirmed the case, saying they were notified by a member of the public who reported seeing the front glass panel shattered.

A CID team went to the scene and later gleaned the car registration number from the CCTV footage, and immediately sent an alert to all the exit points of the district.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a black Proton Waja was involved and the driver hastily escaped after the incident.

A crosscheck with Road Transport Department (JPJ) revealed the background of the owner of the vehicle.

“However, the sheepish driver in the vehicle voluntarily turned up at the police station later, explaining that it was an accident because he entered the wrong gear in reversing and pressing the accelerator pedal that caused the car to lurch forward,” he said.

The case has been referred to the Traffic Branch for investigation to facilitate insurance claims.

Both parties agreed to settle the case through insurance claims as there was no element of crime or foul play.
