KAPIT: Kapit Division is ready to assist other divisions or districts interested in holding rafting events.

Hulu Rajang Member of Parliament Wilson Ugak Kumbong said Kapit has had the benefit of 20 years’ experience holding the Baleh-Kapit Raft Safari.

“As far as hosting the event is concerned, we are the experts in organising the event. If there are other districts or divisions that need our technical advice and guidance on hosting a rafting event, we are the experts who could lend them a helping hand to organise their events,” he said during the first flag off for the raft safari over the weekend.

“Rafting is in our roots and it was the chief means of transport in the past prior to the invention of outboard engines. Even though the raft is no longer in use today, the introduction of the Baleh-Kapit Raft Safari is most appropriate and it is one of the tourism products for Kapit.”

He said the event helps to attract tourists to Kapit and the state as a whole.

“I hope the participants from outside Kapit could help to promote the rafting event so that more teams will participate in the annual raft race next year,” he added.

Ugak announced a grant of RM20,000 for Rumah Alan— RM5,000 of which would go to the longhouse’s women’s bureau, while the rest would go to the village security and development committee. Earlier, he released some 10,000 tengadak fry into Sungai Sekeroh to replenish the fish stocks in the river and Sungai Oyan.
