KUCHING: Some 300 students from 15 secondary schools in Kuching participated in the 2015 Petronas All About Youth (Petronas AAY) boot camp held at the State Youth and Sports Complex here on April 13.

The programme gave young creative minds the opportunity to showcase their talent in coming up with innovative ideas. It was also designed to get the youth to generate higher level of skills in thinking, leadership, and project management.

“This CSR-based competition, introduced in 2014, also aims to nurture students’ talents through doing projects in the areas of education, community well-being and environment,” said managing director/chief executive officer of Asean Bintulu Fertilizer Sdn Bhd (a subsidiary of Petronas) M Zainol M Zin through a press release.

“The programme also helped the youth to build character, self-respect and cultivate relationship with peers.

“Petronas sees Petronas AAY as an initiative to inspire participants to become well-rounded individuals and thus would ultimately contribute towards the betterment of the nation,” he added.

During the boot camp, the students were exposed to a series of activities specially designed to promote teamwork and to sharpen their skill in leadership. They were given an overview of how to manage a project.

Petronas will grant RM2,000 to each of the participating schools to create impactful and innovative projects that can contribute to their surrounding communities.

Their projects will be monitored by the corporation’s staff volunteers and secretariat.

The students are given seven weeks to complete their projects before the state-level judging session after which one school will be selected to represent Sarawak at the grand finale to be held on Sept 10 in Kuala Lumpur.

The projects will be judged on their originality, uniqueness, impact, creativity, sustainability, and clarity of presentation.

Last year, SMK Lutong, Miri and SMK Tatau, Bintulu were respectively the first and second runners up of the programme.
