Jobless man pleads not guilty to molotov cocktail attack on bank

ALOR SETAR: An unemployed man pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing mischief by fire with intent to cause damage on a bank in Simpang Kuala here, on April 8.

Chan Huat Chai, 38, from Taman Bersatu, Batas Paip, Kuala Kedah was alleged to have committed the offence at the Simpang Kuala Maybank branch.

According to the charge, which was read before Magistrate Mohd Khairul Hafizuddin, Chan is liable to be jailed up to seven years and fined, if found guilty.

The magistrate set bail at RM5,500 and May 18 for re-mention.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nuur Hafiedzah Md Daud appeared for the prosecution while Chan was represented
by a lawyer from Legal Aid Bureau.

It was reported that Chan had vented his frustration by hurling a ‘Molotov cocktail’ at the front of the bank after he failed to withdraw RM10,000.

He was detained later that night. — Bernama
