MIRI: SUPP secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting gave the thumbs-up to the appointment of his former boss Tan Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui as chairman of Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (GreenTech), saying it was befitting his experience and good industrial relations network.
Chin, who served as energy, green technology and water minister, was a special advisor to GreenTech from November 2013 prior to his appointment as chairman for a two-year period effective April 7 this year, taking over from Keizrul Abdullah.
Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Johnity Ongkili announced Chin’s appointment in a statement yesterday.
Chin will provide counselling to GreenTech on the roll-out of initiatives under its flagship Green Malaysia Plan, Green Procurement, Electric Mobility and Sustainable Living, which aim to position Malaysia as a hub for green technology.
GreenTech Malaysia is a not-for-profit organisation under the purview of the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water which was initiated by Chin in 1999 as one of green initiatives outlined by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in a cabinet reshuffle back then.
Ting, who was Chin’s political secretary then, yesterday told The Borneo Post that the appointment was appropriate and befitting as Greentech Malaysia was created during his tenure as minister of energy, green technology and water.
“We are happy and confident that it would be fruitful as he has very good relationships with industries in Malaysia while he was still minister,” he said.
The purpose of GreenTech is to catalyse green technology deployment as Malaysia’s strategic engine for socio-economic growth, aiming to position the country as a hub for green technology by 2020 and subsequently transform Malaysia into a Green Community by 2030.
Formerly known as Pusat Tenaga Malaysia, GreenTech was set up on May 12, 1998 as a driving force in accelerating the national economy and promoting sustainable development.
The flagship programmes include Green Malaysia Plan 2030, green procurement, electric mobility and sustainable living.
The Green Malaysia Plan 2030 details the strategic direction for the country to implement green technology policies that will drive the change into a green economy, through the harmonisation of economic growth with environmental sustainability.
