SIBU: Conforming schools in the country are faced with a shortage of about 50 Chinese language teachers, according to Malaysian Conforming Secondary Schools Principals Council’s chairman Tan Teik Seong.

Eleven of them were going to retire this year, Tan said of the many challenges they were facing now.

He thus hoped the Ministry of Education could help resolve the (shortage) issue.

“We leave it to the ministry to send teachers from other schools which have excess Chinese Language teachers,” Tan told reporters when asked to clarify on a point in his speech during the closing of the council’s Education Conference and its 22nd General Assembly here yesterday.

Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah officiated at the closing ceremony.

Tan figured the services of temporary teachers could be engaged as a stop-gap measure. He added that if one particular school was short of one to two teachers, the situation was still manageable.

“But if a small school was short of three teachers, it might pose some problems for students attending the Chinese Language classes.”

He also noted of the shortage of school leaders as teachers were reluctant to become senior assistants and principals.

The conference organising chairman Tan Kim Hock said the conference received overwhelming response with

76 schools taking part, the highest number ever, comprising 123 participants.

He added that there were 79 conforming schools in the country.

He said five such schools were among 10 schools in the country with the best achievements in the STPM examination.
