MIRI: Drug-trafficking is a major crime concern in Sarawak.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said this when he declared open a dialogue between Home Ministry and Community Policing Association of Malaysia at Mega Hotel here yesterday.

“Drug trafficking was not a problem in the state before. It develops from glue-sniffing. Now, the trafficking of methamphetamine is here and is posing a threat to the state.”

Wan Junaidi also shared his concern about social crimes such as gambling which involved all races and also illegal immigrants.

He thus said that community policing had been identified as the most ideal tool to curb the menace.

He is confident that the community policing programme would help the police in reducing the crime rate and keeping the country and its people safe.

“The community policing programme was started by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar who now wants to intensify the programme in response to the Key Performance Index (KPI) set by the government on the commitment to reduce the crime rate in the country,” he told the dialogue session.

Later at the same function, he presented certificates to the members of community policing programme.

DCP Datuk Seri Muhammad Sabtu Osman, director of Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department of Bukit Aman Dato Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani, Home Ministry’s secretary-general Datuk Alwi Ibrahim and president of Community Policing Association Malaysia Kuan Chee Heng were also present.
