High pollution of Martapura River

BANJARMASIN,  South Kalimantan: Banjarmasin Regional Environment Agency (BLHD) found river water of Martapura highly polluted by Total Dssolved Solid (TDS) and Total Suspended Solid (TSS), Antaranews reported.

Head of Banjarmasin BLHD, Hamdi, here on Saturday said TDS contamination is dissolved solids derived from many organic sources such as leaves, plakton and industrial waste and sewage. While TSS is pollution from mud, clay, metal oxides, algae, bacteria and fungi.

“TSS is like any objects floating in the water,” he explained.

He said that the content of TDS and TSS in this Martapura River has exceeded the quality standard limits, which happens quite turbid water conditions and dangerous to consume directly.

“It’s true that taps company has trouble processing this Martapura river water into clean water,” he explained.

Previously, Technical Director of regional water company PDAM Bandarmasih, Yudha Ahmadi, claimed it increasingly hard to process water from the Martapura River, because it contains mud, and quite dangerous substances, then taps need a lot of chemicals, “he said.
