Death toll rises to eight, 13 remain missing in China mine flooding

BEIJING: The death toll from coal mine flooding in northern China’s Shanxi province has risen to eight after a miner died at a hospital on Tuesday.

The rescue team had saved four more miners from the flooded coal mine on Tuesday morning and all were sent to the hospital, Xinhua news agency reported.

The accident which took place on Sunday evening had left another 13 miners remained trapped underground while a rescue team of some 600 rescuers continued pumping out water and drilling holes from the surface.

It was reported that a total of 247 people were working inside the Jiangjiawan mine near the city of Datong during the incident occurred, while 223 miners made it out safely to the surface.

An initial investigation suggested the flooding was caused by water accumulated in a underground area at the colliery, Xinhua said.-Bernama
