KUALA LUMPUR: The government will consider involving other uniformed bodies besides the Armed Forces and the Royal Malaysian Police in the integrated operation to tackle militant activity in the country.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said efforts to involve other uniformed bodies, such as the Civil Defence Department and the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela), were deemed necessary to prevent spread of IS ideology and activity.

“I agree that more should be done involving other uniformed bodies and agencies. This is indeed a good suggestion,” he told reporters after giving a lecture on Malaysia’s Defence and Security Policies here yesterday.

The 35/2015 series lecture held at the Malaysian Armed Forces Defence College was attended by 40 Strategy and Defence Studies participants from seven countries.

Hishammuddin said, right now, the IS militant activity in the country was still under control and the government was prepared to face any untoward incidents.

Meanwhile, Hishammuddin called on parents to monitor their children’s activity in the social media so that their young ones would not be influenced and lured to join the IS militant group.

“Social media can cause innocent and inexperience children to be influenced and lured to participate in militant activity,” he said.

Although no such incidents had occurred in Malaysia, Hishammuddin did not refute the possibility that it would occur one day. — Bernama
