MAA eyes 8 gold in state schools archery championship

MIRI: The Miri Archery Association (MAA) has set a target of eight gold medals for its squad of 21 archers in the Sarawak Schools Sports Council (MSSS) Archery Championship held in Bintulu starting yesterday.

The championship which started yesterday will end this Sunday.

MAA president David Ting said yesterday the squad were selected from primary and secondary schools here.

“The archers are to compete in a total of six categories; Boys U12, Girls U12, Boys U15, Girls U15, Boys U18 and Girls U18.”

The schools are SJK Chung Hua, SJK Chung San, SK Riam Batu, SK St. Columbia, SR Sri Mawar, Riam Road Secondary School, SMK Riam Taman Tunku, SMK Chung Hua, SMK St. Columbia and SMK St. Joseph. Ting added that the championship was also a selection trial for the state’s SUKMA squad next year.

State archery head coach Abdul Razak Yaacob was quoted saying he would use the championship to select the Sukma shadow team.

He revealed that he was still looking for eight more archers to complete the initial squad of 24 archers which will be trimmed to for next year’s Sukma which will be hosted by the state.

Razak had also set a target of four gold medals in the 2016 Sukma and that 80 per cent of the squad would be new faces.
