SUPP sets up GST Special Committee

MIRI: A special team will be set up to enable members of the public still confused about the newly imposed Goods and Services Tax (GST) to file their complaints and inquiries.

Disclosing this yesterday, SUPP Piasau branch chairman Datuk Sebastian Ting said although it had been three weeks since the implementation, the situation was chaotic for both consumers and merchandisers.

“Complaints have been flooding in to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs that varied from the uncertainties on GST to price increment. We are not sure about the numbers, but we understand that the related department needs time to process all this.

“Hence, we have come up with the GST Special Committee, comprising youth sections from SUPP branches in Piasau, Senadin, Lambir and Pujut,” he said.

Ting pointed out that the committee would be an alternative channel for the public to file their complaints, should they fail to reach out to the relevant department.

“First and foremost, consumers are concerned about their rights, from the GST calculation, how to identify a GST-registered company from those that are not and price increment. We will collect all the inquiries and from there, we will decide on where we should refer to.

“Meanwhile, I was also approached by merchandisers who do not know how to register nor know how to use the point of sales (POS) system. Moreover, the Chinese community is very concerned over the lists of GST-included and GST exempted items which were all listed in Bahasa Malaysia and English language,” he said.

On the allegation of profiteering, Ting urged the authority to look into the matter as it concerned consumer rights and the country’s economy.

He said the committee would be headed by Aries Leong with Betty Pong as deputy chairman as well as 10 other committee members.
