KUCHING: Parents must try to show their appreciation and praise their children for every achievement.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem said positive reinforcement would gradually build children’s confidence so that they are motivated and encouraged to do better.

“Children need to know that they are being appreciated. Do go for your child’s school activities like parent-teacher association (PTA) day, or prize-giving day, even if you are not a member of the PTA.

“Show support and appreciation to your children. This will help build a positive mindset in them,” he said during the Sarawak Bumiputera Chamber of Commerce (DUBS) Women’s branch and Ministry of Welfare, Women and Family Development ‘Parents Day’ on Wednesday.

He said parents should show full responsibility towards their children and never make promises they could not fulfil because the disappointment could scar children for the rest of their lives.

In today’s challenging and technologically advanced era, Adenan stressed the need to strengthen the family institution with love.

“When they are taught love and brought up with love, they will grow up with a positive mind. Do not teach our children to hate,” he said.

Among those present were Adenan’s wife Datin Patinggi Datuk Jamilah Anu, Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah, DUBS Women’s branch chairperson Zaiton Istiar Hussain Khan.
