Bersih Sabah reminded of risk in illegal rally

KOTA KINABALU: Deputy Chief Minister, Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan yesterday urged the organisers of Bersih Sabah to look for other means to express their message instead of holding a rally this coming May 1.

He said this was because their application to hold the rally had not been approved by the City Mayor, Datuk Abidin Madingkir.

Speaking to reporters after partaking in the wreath laying ceremony in memory of the fallen war heroes at Jalan Tugu near here yesterday, Pairin reminded that if they continued to hold the rally, they would be going against the law.

“There are so many other channels of expression…they are taking a risk if they flout the law,” he said.

The organiser of the Bersih Sabah is said to have sought a permit to hold the rally at Padang Merdeka.

Meanwhile, Pairin said the work to upgrade Kalabakan-Sapulut Road is nearly completed.

“You can now see a huge difference in the road when it was being constructed last year and now,” he said.

“It is much more comfortable to drive on,” he said.

He added that he had just visited the site three weeks ago.

Nevertheless, Pairin said there was a need to stop heavy trucks that were overloaded from using the new road.

He said these trucks were the main culprits behind the bad road conditions in Sabah, and urged the relevant authorities such as the Road Transport Department to cooperate in looking after the road and to ensure road users observed the law.
