Kuching sweep 10 titles at MSSS tennis meet

KUCHING: Kuching stamped their domination in the Sarawak Schools Sports Council (MSSS) Tennis Championship yesterday when they won 10 out of the 11 finals at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association tennis centre.

Only Miri managed to prevent the Kuching clean sweep when they won the Boys U12 doubles through Leroy Ko and Elson Yong who outplayed Sean Christian and Melvyn Tiang of Kuching 4-6, 6-4 (10-9) in yesterday’s final.

As expected, Sukma 2014 medallists Rohaizat Achop and Alia Azman delivered the goods for Kuching.

Rohaizat had to sweat for a 6-3, 2-6 (10-7) win over teammate Adrian Lim in the Boys U18 singles final. Joint third were Charles Runyam of Miri and Cheah Du Bhe of Bintulu.

The duo teamed up to claim the Boys U18 doubles title when they beat another Kuching pair Sean Chin and Tay Chen Kiat 6-0, 6-3.

Charles Runyam/Mark John of Miri and Then Khi Piaw/Muhd Arnas from Samarahan were joint third.

In the Boys U15 singles final, Mark Leong emerged the champion after beating teammate Mohd Norhadzmi 6-1, 6-7 (14-12).

Finishing in joint third were Mitchell Brapui and Nicklaus Sim, both from Kuching.

The Boys U15 doubles final saw Mohd Norhadzmi/Mitchell Brapui winning the gold medal after they beat Mark Leong and Nicklaus Sim in an all-Kuching affair.

Tan Lin En of Kuching bagged the Boys U12 singles gold when he beat Leroy Ko of Miri 6-3, 6-2 in the final.

Meanwhile, in the Girls U18 singles competition that saw only five participants, Alia overcame the challenge from her teammate Kirstin Leong in the final to win 6-4, 6-4.

Cheah Al Kaid of Bintulu and Agatha Caroline were joint third.

Other titles won by Kuching were through the sisters pair of Angeline Ong and Abigail Ong in the Girls U15 doubles, Angeline Ong (Girls U15 singles), Lim Zan Ning (Girls U12 singles) and Ling Zan Ning/Brigitta Chai (Girls U12 doubles).

Deputy Samarahan District Education Officer Abdul Latip Bujang gave away the trophies, medals and certificates of participation.
