KUALA LUMPUR: The oft-quoted adage that a leopard never changes its spots may hold true for a rogue despatch rider who allegedly returned to a life of crime – about a year after serving six years in jail for drug trafficking.

On Thursday, the police nabbed the 38-year-old man, suspected to have underworld connections, during a raid at his rented house in Gombak, Batu Caves.

There, an assortment of drugs worth RM123,560, a Browning pistol and 52 rounds of ammunition were seized in the 1.30am raid, said Gombak police chief ACP Ali Ahmad.

He said the drugs comprised 3,000 Ecstasy pills, 10.2 grammes of Ketamine, 21 pieces of compressed marijuana and two plastic containers of dried marijuana leaves weighing 1.629 grammes.

“We are trying to determine if the suspect, who is a despatch rider for a printing company, is linked to secret societies and has a source which regularly supplies drugs,” he told a press conference at the Gombak police headquarters.

Initial investigations revealed that the man was supplying drugs for the local addict population, said Ali, adding that the house was rented by the suspect for the past four months, possibily for drug-related activities.

He said the suspect was investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction, and the Firearms Act 1960.

He said initial investigations revealed that the suspect was renting the house since four months ago and the police believed he carry out the drug activities for the local market.

Ali said on Dec 13, 2013, the suspect was released from a six-year imprisonment during which he was ordered to be given 10 strokes of the rotan for drug-related charges. — Bernama
