KOTA KINABALU: A 23-year-old man was sentenced to seven days in jail for verbally threatening a police officer.

Jumadi Rusdi admitted to magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus that he had uttered the words to Corporal Siddek Lamasin on April 20, last year at a bus stop near the Karamunsing Complex, here.

The offence, framed under Section 8(1)(e) of the Minor Offences Ordinance of Sabah, carries a week-long prison term or a fine of RM25.

The facts of the case stated that at around 5pm, the complainant, Corporal Lamasin, had stopped a blue and white Toyota mini-bus as the occupant had not been wearing his safety belt.

Siddek had then issued a summons to the driver, Jumadi, which prompted him to say “nasib kau pakai uniform polis, kalau tidak” (you are lucky to be wearing a police uniform, if not), before tearing the summons.

Jumadi had not been cooperative with the police as he did not show his identification card. The complainant then made a police report at around 6:06pm, the same day.

During mitigation, Jumadi asked for leniency, though prosecuting officer Inspector Azaman Hamat urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence as a lesson to the accused.

Cindy ordered the accused to serve his prison sentence from his date of sentencing.

In a separate case, a local man denied stealing 596 pieces of scrap metal rods.

Nanyo Ilak, 30, claimed trial to stealing 384 pieces of scaffolding U-Base scrap metal rods and 212 Jack Base scrap metal rods from the Oceanus Construction Yard.

The scrap metal rods belonged to Sun Sea Development.

Framed under Section 381 of the Penal Code, the offence provides for a maximum prison term of seven years and a fine, upon conviction.

As he had claimed trial, he was granted RM3,000 bail with two local sureties, and the court fixed his case management on May 22.
