Sabah should have holistic approach in outlining ESSCOM programmes – MIMA

KUALA LUMPUR: The Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) has mooted for the Sabah Government to have a holistic approach in outlining the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) territorial development programmes.

MIMA centre head and research fellow, Captain Martin A. Sebastian said the approach for ESSCOM’s territory should not merely focus on security but also consider the development of its economy, social, politics and environment preservation.

“The result of the research has been presented by MIMA to the ESSCOM Coordinator, as well as Sabah Cabinet and we are now waiting for their reponse,” he told reporters at MIMA with Media Day here today.

ESSCOM was established on April 1, 2013, following intrusion into Sabah by armed men from the Southern Philippines, which threatened the country’s sovereignity.

Its area comprises Sabah’s east coast region including Kudat, Tawau, Kunak, Sandakan and Lahad Datu. — BERNAMA
