KUCHING: Sarawak PAS leadership has openly expressed its full support to the state government’s request for 20 per cent oil and gas royalty and also the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

State PAS commissioner Adam Ahid told a media conference that this was conveyed to Adenan himself when they paid a courtesy call on the latter at his office in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) complex here yesterday.

“During our meeting with Tan Sri just now, we expressed our full support for the state to demand higher oil and gas royalty which was passed during a DUN sitting last year.

“We also expressed our full confidence in his leadership and we also told him that the state PAS stands by him and wanted him to pursue the matter,” he said.

Adam earlier presented documents to the state government, which was received by Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club (BNBBC) chairman Abdullah Saidol soon after the courtesy call.

He explained that the documents contained their proposal for a law to limit coastal fishing to three nautical miles offshore to be tabled at the DUN.

Meanwhile, Abdullah said on behalf of the state government, he welcomed such a friendly gesture from state PAS leaders.

“Most importantly is that they have acknowledged that Sarawak is not a place for religious extremists and bigots.

“The chief minister has spelt this very clearly to them and that the party should never bring the political style in Peninsular Malaysia to Sarawak, which they seemed to fully understand and I want to thank them for that,” he said.

On the possibility of PAS bringing Hudud law to Sarawak, Adam said it was almost impossible for the Islamic law to be implemented in the state for various reasons.

“As a Muslim, I personally accept Hudud but to bring the law to Sarawak as of now, I don’t have the means. We have not won even one seat in the state DUN. Moreover, we all know that Muslims do not form the majority in Sarawak.

“So unless all Sarawakians become Muslims or other religions agree to it, Hudud in Sarawak is almost impossible,” he added.

Eight other state PAS leaders including its Youth chief Mohamad Arifirazul Paijo and Women chief Jurina Mut also came along to pay courtesy call on Adenan yesterday.
