Ka Tung leads qualifiers into final round

KUCHING: Defending champion Lee Ka Tung maintained his lead on the second day of the 46th SGA Sarawak Amateur Open Golf Championship at Kelab Golf Bintulu (KGB) and qualified for today’s final round.

The Sibu Golf Club (SGC) ace continued with his fine form after returning the day with a gross score of two-over 74 and secured a berth in the final round with a total score of 150. He carded a score of 76 in the opening day.

Lee sank a birdie over Hole 12 but landed a double bogey over Hole 13 and earlier on in the first nine, he bogeyed over Hole 4 and 7.

Also playing in the same flight with Lee was John Ling Cheng Ong of KGB who also qualified for the final round after he carded a gross score of four-over 76 for a total score of 152. John carded a score of 76 in the opening day.

In the men’s category, only the top 36 golfers with a gross total score of 165 and below will qualify for the final round. Those who played yesterday morning were among those who were the earlier qualifiers.

Among them was Aaron Lau Zhun Min from state’s junior squad who carded a total gross score of 154.

He carded a gross score of 81 in the opening day.

Lau will be joined by top juniors from Sabah namely Casper Loh, Albright Chong, Eldrick Chong and Suzari Iqma.

Other early qualifiers are Lee Kah Tiong, Nasrul Iman and James Wong Kee Tiing all of whom are from KGB, Abdul Rahim Abdul Rahman from Damai Golf & Country Club (DGCC) and Mohd Danial Faidz from the Malaysia Golf Association (MGA).

Heavy rain had temporarily disrupted yesterday’s afternoon round and the final list of qualifiers will be made known in the late evening but those who are expected to make the cut are namely Sarawak’s Classic defending champion, Mohd Lokman Mustaffa, Lee Kah Ming and Johari Aman all from KGS, Lau Chin Leong from SGC and Lim Beng Kiat from Miri Golf Club (KGM).
