KUCHING: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Women vice chief Voon Shiak Ni wants the authorities to enlighten the public on the actual status and progress of the proposed Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) multi-storey carpark.

In a press statement, Voon called upon Minister of Local Government and Community Development Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh to explain the lack of progress on the proposed carpark.

She said that the growing number of patients and expansion of SGH 20 years ago urgently called for an increase in parking spaces.

“The traffic congestion at SGH is an undeniable fact since 20 years ago with the expansion of the hospital and opening of specialist clinics. The lack of parking spaces has given rise to much inconvenience for members of the public wishing to visit their loved ones and friends at the hospital as well as for those seeking treatment.

“A multi-storey carpark is a need and necessity and we appeal for serious commitment from the Sarawak government to build the carpark as soon as possible,” Voon said.

Previously during the May 2013 state assembly, Wong in his winding- up speech for his ministry had said that the proposed car park was expected to start construction in 2013 once a contractor had been appointed.

In 2014, State Health Department director Datu Dr Zulkifli Jantan had said that the multi-storey carpark was in its final design stages and had been awarded to a contractor and work would commence in July that year.

However, to date, Voon said that there was no sign of any work-in-progress for the construction of the carpark.
