Foreigner arrested for suspected drug possession

KENINGAU: Police arrested a foreign man suspected of drug possession in Kampung Suan Mile 6 Keningau-Nabawan Road here on Sunday.

The 23-year-old man did not have any valid documents when arrested, said district police chief Deputy Superintendent Douglas Nyeging Taong in a press conference here yesterday.

He said on April 26 about 5pm, a team from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department had arrested the foreigner in Kampung Suan Mile 6 Keningau-Nabawan Road here as he was behaving in a suspicious manner.

He said an inspection was conducted on the suspect, and police found two small packets of transparent plastic and 11 small transparent plastic sachets suspected to contain syabu inside a plastic container stored in the pocket of the pants worn by the suspect.

“The market price of the drugs seized is estimated at RM1,000. The initial urine screening test performed on the suspect also tested positive for the drugs, methamphetamine and amphetamine.

“The estimated gross weight of the seized drugs was 6.25 grams and the case is being investigated under Section 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 15 (1) (a) of the same act,” he said.

Douglas said if convicted under Section 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, an offender can be jailed for between two to five years and received between three to nine whippings, while Section 15 (1) (a) of the same Act provides for a prison sentence of two years or a fine of RM5,000 upon conviction.
